GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS
CAMERA CARD
Students will have access to a digital camera that can shoot stills and motion pictures through COM’s Field Production Services (FPS). However, students will need to purchase at least one Class 10 SDHC card with a capacity of 8 or 16GB for use in the camera. The SanDisk card shown here is a very good product, but Kingston, Transcend and Microcenter all sell cards for somewhat lower prices that have proven reliable in the past.
HARD DRIVE FOR STORAGE AND EDITING
COM will provide editing software for use in this class. Both audio and video editing will be done using Adobe Premiere software. Students will need to purchase an external disc drive for editing and storing media. This drive should have a capacity of at least 250GB with a Firewire 800 connection. The drive should be rated to operate at a speed of at least 7200 rpm.
The G-Tech Mini model shown here has worked well in the past. Note that, in this example, the drive has two Firewire 800 ports and a USB 3.0 input. This means that the drive will work both on older computers that still use Firewire 800 connections as well as newer machines that are USB 3.0 compatible.
MEDIA STORAGE AUDIO RECORDER
FPS will also provide the Tascam DR-07mkII audio recorders used in the class. The Tascam recorders also use micro-SD cards. FPS provides these cards in the recorders as a courtesy. Any recorder checked out with a micro-SD card must be returned with the same card in place. FPS is not responsible for the data recorded onto the cards, and if a student checks out a recorder without a card, then it is the student’s responsibility to purchase a card.
